Mountaineers Lead GARC Championship as Lake, Syrja Hit Smallbore Podium

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Juniors Griffin Lake and Lauri Syrja hit the individual smallbore podium, finishing in second and third place, during the opening day of competition of the Great America Rifle Conference Championship. West Virginia posted the top team smallbore score to sit in first place at the championship being hosted by Army in West Point, New York.
After shooting an opening-day smallbore score of 2358, the West Virginia University Rifle team sits five points ahead of second-place Navy, which scored 2353 during the first day of action.
West Virginia was led by Lake, who claimed first place in the smallbore final with a mark of 463.0. He finished just behind Kentucky's Braden Peiser, who hit a 463.9. Lyrja rounded out the podium with his final mark of 453.0. Lake led WVU in qualifying with a 591, as Syrja hit a 589.
In total, three Mountaineers qualified for the eight-person final. Sophomore Jacob Wisman took home sixth place in the final. In qualifying, Wisman produced a season high 590 to earn his spot in the final.
Sophomore Camryn Camp posted a 588 as sophomore Ashlyn Blake finished just behind with a 587. Sophomore Jennifer Kocher and freshman Jack Ogoreuc finished with matching 586 scores as Maximus Duncan rounded out the Mountaineers with a 583.
Five Mountaineers counted toward the team's opening-day score in Camp, Kocher, Lake, Syrja, and Wisman.
Akron is third after a 2346 smallbore, while Kentucky and Army are tied in fourth at 2345 and Memphis sits sixth entering the final day of competition with a 2333.
