
WVU Posts Second 195.0+ Score of the Year in Home Finale

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team celebrated its 2026 senior class and capped its 2026 home slate in a 195.975-195.275 loss to No. 24 BYU inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown on Friday night.
The Mountaineers posted scores of 48.875 on vault, 48.8 on uneven bars, 48.55 on balance beam and 49.05 on floor exercise. Of note, West Virginia celebrated seniors Brooke Irwin, Carlee Nelson, Olivia Pitzer and Miranda Smith following the meet.
Opening on vault, WVU was led by a pair of 9.85's from sophomore Sophia Rice and freshman Kayla Smith, which matched a season high for Rice and was a new career high for Smith. Sophomore Emerson Smith scored a 9.775, and classmate Karleigh DiCello recorded a 9.725. Junior Amber Lowe made her career debut in the vault lineup, tallying a 9.675.
On bars, junior Jurnee Lane paced the lineup with a season-high matching 9.8, while classmate Jayden McDonnell was just behind her with a 9.775. Kayla Smith and Lowe recorded matching 9.75's, and freshman Haley Mendoza scored a 9.725.
In the third rotation on beam, all six gymnasts stayed on the beam for another successful beam performance. Lowe scored a 9.775, and Mendoza added a 9.75. The scoring was rounded out by a 9.725 from Kayla Smith, a 9.7 from junior Kaylei Adams and a 9.6 from Nelson.
Wrapping up on floor, West Virginia put up an impressive performance with four of five scoring gymnasts tallying a 9.8 or higher. Emerson Smith led the way with a 9.85, followed by sophomore Taylor Tuohy with a career-best 9.825. Nelson and Kayla Smith record a pair of 9.8's, while freshman Auden Pederson was just shy of a 9.8 with a 9.775.
Two Mountaineers competed on all-around for the first time this season, with Lowe making her career debut on vault to compete in all four events for the first time. Kayla Smith matched her career-best score with a 39.125 to finish in first place on all-around. Unfortunately, Lowe took a fall on floor, so she tallied a 38.125 in her all-around debut to finish in second place behind Smith.
Elsewhere in the event standings, Rice and Kayla Smith tied for first on vault, and Lane tied for third on bars. Emerson Smith also tied for second place on floor.
Up next, West Virginia caps its first of two double meet weekends in Towson, Maryland, on Sunday, March 1. The Mountaineers will join the host Tigers, NC State and Ursinus for a quad meet at 2 p.m. ET inside Towson's SECU Arena.
