MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team recorded a 194.075-194.425 loss to Big 12 Conference foe Arizona State inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown on Saturday night.
The Mountaineers posted scores of 48.9 on vault, 48.6 on uneven bars, 47.85 on balance beam and 48.725 on floor exercise to finish in second place. Although West Virginia was leading after two rotations, it continued to struggle on beam and fell behind after the third rotation. The Sun Devils also saw struggles on beam, but WVU couldn't make up the deficit in the final rotation.
On vault, West Virginia was led by a pair of 9.8 scores from sophomores Karleigh DiCello and Sophia Rice, while classmates Taylor Tuohy and Emerson Smith were just behind them with two 9.775's. A 9.75 from freshman Kayla Smith capped the scoring on the opening rotation.
Moving to bars, junior Amber Lowe led the way with her second straight 9.825 on the event. Junior Jayden McDonnell and freshman Haley Mendoza scored matching 9.75's, which marked a new season high for McDonnell. Kayla Smith secured a 9.675, and sophomore Kaelyn Skeel finished the second rotation with a 9.6.
WVU started solid on beam, with a 9.75 from Lowe, a 9.725 from Mendoza and a 9.625 from Kayla Smith, but then its struggles from previous meets continued in the second half of the lineup. Following a fall in the No. 4 spot, a 9.525 from senior Carlee Nelson and a 9.225 from sophomore Eden Webster were unfortunately counted toward the final event's score.
The Mountaineers tried to regain momentum on floor but only saw one 9.8 score from freshman Auden Pederson. Lowe followed with a 9.775, and Nelson and Kayla Smith recorded a pair of 9.725's. Rice capped the scoring with a 9.7 in her return to the lineup.
Kayla Smith finished with a 38.775 on all-around, good for second place in the final event standings. Elsewhere, DiCello and Rice tied for second place on vault, and Lowe added a third-place finish on bars and beam.
West Virginia now looks ahead to a trip to Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday, Feb. 21, for a dual meet against Big 12 opponent Arizona. Competition at the McKale Center is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
