
Mountaineers Break Program Record with 11–0 Start After Sweep of Jacksonville

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (11–0) made history Friday night, defeating Jacksonville in straight sets (25–22, 25–17, 25–22). The victory marks the best start to a season in program history, surpassing the previous 10–0 records set in 2021 and 2013. It also represents the Mountaineers' sixth consecutive sweep.
WVU showcased a balanced attack and disciplined defense throughout the match, totaling 36 kills, five service aces, and six total blocks while hitting .258 as a team.
In the opening set, the Mountaineers recorded 12 kills on 27 attempts (.296), along with one ace and two blocks to establish early control. Set two featured WVU's most efficient offensive stretch, hitting .423 with 12 kills and just one error on 26 swings, complemented by three aces and two blocks. Despite a dip in hitting percentage in the third set (.111), the Mountaineers remained aggressive, adding 12 more kills, one ace, and two blocks to complete the sweep.
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning led the scoring effort with 10 kills on 20 attempts (.350), one ace, four digs, and one block, totaling 11.5 points. Redshirt senior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton contributed seven kills, two aces, and six digs for 9.5 points. Redshirt junior opposite Trinity Sheridan added five kills, two digs, and two total blocks, finishing with six points.
Setters redshirt junior Alexis Finnvold and freshman Sarah Pfiffner directed the offense with 16 assists each. Finnvold also added two aces and four digs, while Pfiffner chipped in four digs.
Senior middle blocker Maddy McGath contributed four kills and five total blocks for 6.5 points. Senior Laila Ibrahim added five kills and one block. Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with a match-high 14 digs and provided stability in serve receiving.
West Virginia concludes its appearance at the Dolphin Volleyball Classic on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Jacksonville State.
