Beam Lineup Helps Propel WVU to Season High at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – Led by a season-high score on balance beam, the West Virginia University gymnastics team reached a new season-best 196.125 in a quad meet at Towson with George Washington and Penn inside TU Arena in Towson, Maryland, on Tuesday night.
Posting their first 196.0+ score of the season, the Mountaineers reached their highest team total since scoring a 196.225 at the 2023 Big 12 Championship. Additionally, the total is tied for No. 45 on WVU's top 50 team scores in program history. WVU reached the season-high total with scores of 48.925 on vault, 48.925 on uneven bars, a season-best 49.3 on balance beam and a 48.975 on floor exercise. Of note, the score on beam was the squad's highest since it hit a 49.475 on March 5, 2023.
In the team standings, host Towson took first place with a 196.4, while Penn finished in second with a 196.2. West Virginia was just behind Penn in third (196.125), and George Washington finished in fourth with a 195.8.
The Mountaineers started out strong on floor, with senior Anna Leigh once again leading the lineup with a 9.875. Freshman Emerson Smith followed close behind with a career-high tying 9.85, while classmate Riley Maness added a 9.775. Freshman Taylor Tuohy scored a 9.75, and sophomore Amber Lowe capped the scoring with a 9.725.
Moving to vault, three scores of 9.8 from senior Brooke Alban and freshmen Karleigh DiCello and Sophia Rice led the way. Junior Carlee Nelson was just shy of the top score with a 9.775, while Smith wrapped up a great vault rotation with a 9.75.
West Virginia kept up its momentum on bars, as Lowe paced the squad for the third straight meet with a 9.825. Leigh scored an impressive 9.8, while Alban and freshman Kaelyn Skeel posted a pair of 9.775's, which marked a career best for Skeel. Sophomore Jayden McDonnell added a 9.75 to finish out the third rotation.
WVU shined on beam to finish out the meet, with all five scoring gymnasts posting a 9.825 or higher. DiCello led the way with a huge, career-best 9.925. The score marked the highest for the Mountaineers on the event this season, while it was the first 9.925 on beam since March 5, 2023. Sophomore Julia Brown reached a season best and matched her career high with a 9.875, while freshman Eden Webster scored a career-high 9.85. Lowe and Leigh scored matching 9.825's to finish the meet in a big way.
Of note, Webster delivered a clutch performance following a low score ahead of her in the beam lineup. She stayed solid in the sixth lineup spot and hit an impressive routine to replace the score and propel the beam team to a season high.
In the final event standings, DiCello earned a share of the top spot on beam, while Leigh tied for third on floor.
WVU now looks ahead to completing its first two-meet week of the season with a dual meet at Pitt on Sunday, March 9. Competition at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
