
Mountaineers Fall to No. 14 Kansas in Straight Sets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (14–8, 2–8 Big 12) was defeated by No. 14 Kansas (17–8, 8–3 Big 12) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon inside Hope Coliseum. The match concluded with set scores of 16–25, 18–25, and 17–25.
This contest marked only the second time this season that the Mountaineers have lost in straight sets, the previous instance occurring at UCF on October 12.
West Virginia recorded 10 kills on a .194 hitting percentage in the opening set, followed by 12 kills at a .300 clip in the second. In the third set, the Mountaineers posted 10 kills with a .161 efficiency. Overall, WVU finished the match with 32 kills on 96 attempts, hitting .219. The offense was led by 30 assists and one service ace, while the defense contributed 31 digs and one total block.
Redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan paced the Mountaineers with 11 kills on 26 attempts, hitting .269 and totaling 11 points. She also added four digs. Junior outside hitter Nina Horning followed with seven kills and four digs, contributing eight points.
Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath was efficient at the net, hitting .312 with six kills, two digs, and one total block for 6.5 points. Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added three kills on six attempts, hitting .333.
Additional contributions came from sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott, who posted three kills, and senior middle blocker Chalina Lederer, who added two kills and one total block for 2.5 points.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with 23 assists and added five digs. Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with 10 digs and two assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter contributed five digs, while freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner added two assists.
West Virginia will now travel to Texas for a three-match road swing, beginning with a contest against Baylor on Friday, November 7, in Waco, Texas. First serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at the Ferrell Center.
